‘Savage Dog’ Trailer and Poster

After previously appearing in Doctor Strange alongside Mads Mikkelsen in Doctor Strange, Scott Adkins is back in what looks to be a promising action thriller titled Savage Dog. The synopsis is as follows:

Indochina – 1959. A lawless town controlled by the criminal class: Vietnamese warlords and European war criminals. Den-Dhin-Chan Labor Camp is run by four such dangerous men. The worst prison in the land, it is here that a European, former-champion boxer Martin Tillman (Scott Adkins, Marvel’s “Doctor Strange”) has made a name for himself fighting tournaments, on which wealthy criminals gamble in high stakes events. When Tillman is due for release, he just wants to return home, but the corrupt forces running the jail will do everything in their power to keep him locked down. When all that Tillman holds dear is taken away in a vicious act of violence, he is forced to confront the men responsible and take his revenge.

As a follower of Scott Adkin’s films, I can say that this looks to be a shift from the Undisputed and Ninja films. Adkins describes the fight scenes and being “more realistic” than most of his other films. From the trailer you can certainly see what he means. Where as in the Undisputed and Ninja films the kicks are more for display, here we have fight scenes that are more suited to the characters’ backgrounds and which makes the characters more defined. Adkins says of his character: “Martin is one of these characters that doesn’t say much. He plays his cards close to his chest. He’s a tortured soul. I’ve played this type of character before, but it suits me well.”

Written and directed by Jesse Johnson, Savage Dog also co-stars Chilean martial arts star Marko Zaror (last seen in Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Lives and soon to be seen in Robert Rodriguez & James Cameron’s Alita: Battle Angel), martial arts crossover star Cung Le, Juju Chan (last seen displaying elegance and grace in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny) and veteran actor Keith David (The Thing and Marked for Death).

Savage Dog will be released in theaters and on all VOD platforms summer 2017 from XLrator Media.
